The most common causes for facial fractures include motor vehicle accidents, falls, sports injuries, interpersonal violence and work-related injuries. The goal of surgical fracture treatment is to reestablish the facial appearance without compromising function such as vision, breathing, mouth opening and chewing.

The treatment of facial fractures needs to be accomplished in a thorough and timely fashion. The modern approach treats fractures of facial bones in a manner similar to fractures of other body parts: rigid fixation of facial fractures.

For the facial skeleton, Dr. Fechner uses mini and micro plates and screws that are made of titanium, one of the hardest and biologically best-tolerated metals. In children, he may take advantage of bio-absorbable plates in order to minimize negative effects on the growth of the facial skeleton.

One of the challenges in the repair of broken facial bones is to gain access to the skeleton without placing unacceptable scars in the face.

Therefore, incisions that become necessary are usually small and they are designed so that the resultant scar is hidden.

Dr. Fechner treats patients with facial fractures who come from Worcester, Boston, Framingham, Natick, Newton, and areas throughout Massachusetts. Contact the clinic to set up a consultation.
